Sustainability & Community Engagement
Community Engagement
Sustainability starts with relationships.
We invest time in knowing the parents, families, and community members connected to our schools—listening to their stories, understanding their challenges, and learning about their hopes for the future. By engaging families as partners rather than recipients, our work stays grounded in the real dynamics of life in Mathare.
We prioritize open communication and trust, ensuring families understand not only what we do, but why we do it. As relationships deepen, our programs become more effective, and eduKenya becomes a trusted presence in the community. We also work closely with other local ministries, training centers, and service providers so we can connect families to medical care, community resources, and opportunities beyond our own programs.
Sustainable Impact
Our goal is not short-term relief, but long-term stability. eduKenya operates three sustainability initiatives: a community-based social enterprise, a farming property, and investment properties within Mathare. These projects are designed to create sustainable income for operations and opportunity for skill development and jobs for community members, while strengthening the local economy.
Sustainability Initiatives
Building systems that fund the future.
A key part of eduKenya’s sustainability model is investing directly in Nairobi communities through income-generating properties. Rental income from these investments helps fund school operations and related programs, reducing long-term reliance on donations. These properties also provide safe, improved housing for families who previously lived without running water or electricity.
As investments grow, our vision is for each eduKenya school and program to be primarily supported through earned revenue. We continue to seek partners who share this long-term vision and believe that sustainable investment is one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change for children and families.
Sustainability in Action
Investment Properties:
Our multifamily property protects families from exploitation, improves property value in Mathare, and creates recurring revenue for our programs.
Social Enterprise:
By connecting our talented staff with local business, we create further stability for employees, and help fund eduKenya’s programs.
Farming & Water Project:
In partnership with the Well Coffee Roasters in Nashville, TN. Our farming operation provides a stable food source, water for farmers in our area, revenue, and will eventually be the water source for our future high school.
