About eduKenya
Our Work
Our work focuses on three key areas that together create lasting change in Mathare:
Our Values
Our Story
2006
Children were unsupervised, out of school, and spending their days playing and wading through trash and debris—often missing multiple meals a day. This was the unsettling reality Adam Gould witnessed while spending time with families living in extreme poverty in Nairobi, Kenya. What he saw was not just need, but children with lives unfolding in the absence of opportunity.
January 2007
Moved by what he had seen and driven by a desire to see real change, Adam partnered with Life In Abundance, an international nonprofit with Kenyan roots. Alongside Pastor Isaiah Kamau and the Believers Centre Mathare Church, he helped launch the Kenya Children Project. The work began humbly by expanding the church’s basic childcare program in Jangwani, Mathare—one of the poorest communities in Nairobi.
Starting with just 27 children, the Kenya Children Project steadily grew into a school. Over time, it began directly serving hundreds of children and, by extension, thousands of family and community members. What started as a small response to overwhelming need became a growing source of stability and hope.
December 2010
As the work expanded, so did the vision. In 2010, building on years of progress, Adam and close friend Bob Kikuyu transitioned the Kenya Children Project into what is now eduKenya. eduKenya became a fully registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, created to support students not just for a season, but for the long road ahead.
August 2015
eduKenya broke ground on the permanent home of Mawewa Primary School. Through careful planning, perseverance through challenges, and deep community involvement, the school became a point of pride within Mathare—standing as a visible sign of commitment and hope.
January 2016
As the children grew older, the need grew with them. Families began asking if eduKenya would continue walking with their children beyond primary school. In response, Chelezo High School was opened to continue investing in the formation and future of young men and women.
December 2019
Children who had once arrived as preschoolers reached a milestone many once thought impossible: graduation. eduKenya celebrated its first graduation ceremony, publicly honoring students, encouraging them as they stepped into the next chapter of their lives, and reminding them that they were not walking forward alone.
Graduates moved on to trade programs, universities, and other pathways. Today, some of those former students are now part of eduKenya’s staff team—living reminders that transformation is not just possible, but multiplying.
