Update on Our Land

Update on Our Land

When we began our work in Mathare, we recognized that at a most basic level, hungry children struggle to learn, so the establishment of a feeding program was essential to our work. In light of the rising costs of food due to inflation across the globe, sustainability has become even more important for our work in Kenya. We are excited to share recent progress we are seeing on our land in Mitaboni, Kenya, which is the future home of our Chelezo High School.

After completing our fencing, borehole, and piping last year, we have taken our next step by hiring Samson. Samson has a BSc with experience in organic farming, livestock production, butterfly, poultry and rabbit farming and grafting of fruit trees. As our dedicated farm assistant, he will steward the land and guide our efforts toward sustainable development.

With the drip irrigation system recently installed, Samson has spent the last two months transforming the initial 3.5-acre farming site, dividing it into organized blocks and finalizing the creation of the growing beds.

The farm now has maize and beans growing on one acre and sweet potatoes on a quarter acre, while kale, spinach, beetroot, and peppers are established in the nursery.

With the new irrigation now in place, transplanting of the kale and spinach is planned imminently. We are also moving forward with plans to install security lighting and cameras on the land, protecting all this investment that our donors and partners have made possible.

At eduKenya, our vision is for the children and families of Mathare to experience physical, economic, social, and spiritual transformation through Christ-centered education and opportunity. The Mitaboni farm is a direct expression of that vision.

The produce grown on our Mitaboni land will supplement the feeding program that nourishes our students each school day. Beyond the immediate harvest, this land represents our commitment to long-term sustainability and local investment, values that are central to how we operate. Developing Mitaboni is about building something lasting that will serve our schools for generations of students.

None of this would be possible without your faithful and generous support. Thank you for being part of this story. A very special thank you to The Well and their efforts with Project 77 that allowed us to make the initial investment in infrastructure for this project to get off the ground. Every gift you give helps us build something lasting in Mathare and beyond, one acre, one meal and one student at a time.
