Shiko's Service

Shiko's Service

We often speak about the role our teachers play in the education and guidance of our students, but it is also important to highlight the vital role that our support staff play as they support the learners who come through our gates. For most of our learners, the kitchen staff are some of their favorites.

Jennifer Wanjiku, popularly known as ‘Shiko’ is one of our longest-serving Kenyan staff. She has worked in the catering department for eighteen years since the organization's initial inception in 2007. Shiko begins each day before sunrise, getting to school before our Mawewa Primary students to ensure that every meal will be ready on time. Over the years, Shiko has become more than just a member of the kitchen staff, she has also become a mother figure to many of our learners.

Her caring nature and dedication are evident in everything she does. Whether she is stirring large pots of porridge, making sure the rice doesn’t burn, or gently greeting each learner as they pass through the food line, she does it all with kindness and pride. For Shiko, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing the learners grow. “I remember some of them when they were little. Now they are strong, educated, and giving back to the community,” she recently reflected.

She works closely with the rest of the catering department and is proud to serve as part of a team that nourishes not only the bodies, but also the spirits of the children. Shiko reminds us that it takes a village to nurture the next generation. While the teachers educate, the kitchen staff, like Shiko, feed, encourage, and inspire from behind the scenes. Their role is often hidden, but their impact is undeniable.

As we continue to support our students in their journey of Christ-centered transformation and the pursuit of academic excellence, we are grateful for the hard work of our staff like Shiko. Thanks to your generous donations, our support staff continues to faithfully serve our students every day. We could not pursue our mission without support staff like Shiko, and we cannot grow in impact without you.
