Settling In

Anissa Ella, one of our newest playgroup learners, was accompanied by her father for her first day of school on January 7th 2026. Like all her fellow new playgroup learners, she received her new Mawewa Preprimary uniform sweater, which her proud father helped her put on before class. Anissa cautiously joined the other preschoolers who also reported for their first day of playgroup.

It was a difficult first morning for many of our youngest learners who did not want to be separated from their parents and guardians. Two support staff members, Mama Kiki and Eva played a key role in comforting the learners, especially those who were crying. Our teachers and support staff worked together patiently sharing comforting words and gentle hugs as the children were slowly helped to settle in. They played with the students, keeping them occupied, so they wouldn’t notice their parents leaving. Their kindness and dedication helped transform a difficult moment into a smooth transition.

For our older Mawewa Primary students, laughter and excitement filled the air as the students explored their new classrooms and reconnected with friends. As they settled in for the day, they familiarized themselves with some of their new books, while some students helped with sorting books onto the shelves.

Our learners were excited to see the new updates to the school compound, which were completed over the holiday break. They were especially excited by the new outdoor concrete slab which was laid in the courtyard. The new slab will greatly reduce injuries during recess and minimize the heavy dust that was previously caused by the gravel ground, giving the opportunity to easily bounce balls, run and play.

At our Chelezo High School, we also welcomed our teen students back on Jan 13th. Our teachers welcomed them warmly, checked to make sure students had all the required items, and with their parents, helped them settle into the dorms.

We are excited for the new school year, and hope that our students, from our youngest playgroup, to our older teenage high schoolers, would settle in well and grow academically.
