First Days at Mawewa Primary School
Mawewa Primary School welcomed students back on January 7th. For our youngest learners, the morning brought tears as they separated from their parents. Our teachers and support staff worked patiently together offering care and playing with children to ensure a smooth beginning to the term. Our older primary students returned with excitement, exploring new classrooms, reconnecting with friends, and helping organize books on shelves.
Prayer request: For our youngest learners as they adjust to the school routine, that they would feel safe and loved. Pray for continued patience and wisdom for our teachers and support staff.
New Courtyard Slab at Mawewa (pictured below!)
Because of a generous donor, students discovered a welcome surprise during their first week back, our new outdoor concrete slab in the courtyard, completed over the holiday break. The new surface will reduce injuries during recess and eliminate the heavy dust from the previous gravel ground, creating a safer space for our students.
Prayer request: For the safety of our students as they enjoy the new play area, and that this improved environment will support their physical development and wellbeing.
Chelezo High School Students Return
On January 13th, we welcomed our teenage students back to Chelezo High School. Our teachers met with their parents, briefing them on the upcoming year, and together with their parents, helped them settle into the dorms. The energy and anticipation of a new term filled the campus as students prepared to continue their educational journey toward graduation.
Prayer request: For our high school students as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and academic pressure. Pray that they would grow in wisdom, character, and knowledge, and that they would recognize the unique opportunities before them.
Looking Ahead
As we begin 2026, we're grateful for your partnership in this transformative work. Each day in the classroom, each moment of comfort offered to a crying child, and each improvement to our facilities represents seeds being planted for generational change in Mathare.
Prayer request: For our entire eduKenya team in Kenya and the United States. Pray for unity, wisdom, and perseverance as we continue this important mission. Pray that God would provide the resources needed for this term and that He would be glorified through our work.

800,000 Senior School Learners Still at Home - Despite the historic transition to Grade 10 under Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC*), more than 830,000 of the 1.13 million learners have yet to report to senior school. Parents cite financial hardship, delayed financial aid, and high school fees as primary barriers, with many families unable to afford the Sh53,000 (or roughly $410) annual fee plus additional costs for boarding, uniforms, and transport. Schools have also struggled to be prepared for the new students.
Crisis Over Unprepared Teachers - Secretary General of the Kenya National Teachers Union, Wilson Sossion, warns that the rollout of Grade 10 CBC faces a crisis due to unprepared teachers, despite ministry figures showing nearly 100,000 new teachers hired as students return to the classroom this month.
President Ruto Launches National Drug Rehabilitation Plan - President William Ruto announced that the Kenyan government will establish rehabilitation centers in all 47 counties as part of a renewed national campaign against drug and substance abuse. This initiative reflects growing concern about substance abuse affecting youth across Kenya, including in urban informal settlements like Mathare.
*Kenya’s Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) is a national education system which was launched in 2019. The goal was moving away from traditional exam-driven methods to activity-based learning, practical skills, and developing attitudes necessary for lifelong learning.
