Hope in Mathare

John 1:5 says “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” This is the message of hope we are reminded of at Christmas.

Jane Waithera is a 7th-grade student at our Mawewa Primary School in Mathare. Jane has shown remarkable growth this year despite the challenges of a shifting home environment and a father struggling with alcoholism.

After joining our school, our team walked alongside her grandmother and aunt in their determination to support Jane in her education. With the additional support of her teachers, and the wider eduKenya community, Jane has become a more confident and responsible young girl.

While learning the basics of personal care and responsibility, Jane’s hygiene has improved, her uniform is consistently clean, and she carries herself with dignity. At school, she completes her work faithfully, gets along well with her classmates, and shines in drama, music, and soccer.

Her story is one of hundreds unfolding across our Mawewa Preschool, Mawewa Primary, and Chelezo High School where eduKenya works each day to provide the children of Mathare with education, nutrition, spiritual mentorship, and the unwavering message of God’s redeeming love.

As we celebrate the hope of Christmas, we see that same hope reflected in Jane's resilient spirit and in every child who walks through our doors. The determination she shows each day, the way she's learned to carry herself with dignity despite the instability around her, and her willingness to embrace community and friendship, are the miracles that happen when children are given the chance to flourish. This is the work that eduKenya is called to, creating environments where children don't just survive their circumstances but rise above them with strength, purpose, and joy.
