February Field Report 2026

February Field Report 2026

At this time of year, we can still look at the year ahead without the pressure from exams that need taking, and goals that need reaching. The new year doesn't change us overnight, but shapes our perspective on the future we want to achieve. At eduKenya, we approach everything, from curriculum, operations, and community, with the end in mind. That commitment to long-term impact was on full display at our schools over the last few weeks.

Vacation Bible School

In the second week of January, we hosted a two-day Vacation Bible School (VBS) for students from preschool through 9th Grade. Made possible through our partnership with a local church, the VBS camp engaged students around two themes: "Growing in Christ" from Matthew 7:24–27, and "Better Together" from Mark 2:1–12. Storytelling, songs, crafts, and outdoor activities were woven together to reinforce biblical truths in age-appropriate ways. Our students and partners alike had a wonderful time.

Prayer Request: Pray for the continued spiritual growth of our students, and that every seed of God's Word planted during VBS would take root and flourish in each heart.

Land Sustainability

Sustainability is a key component to supporting our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty in Mathare. Our land in Mitaboni, which is the future home of our Chelezo High School, plays a central role in our sustainability efforts.

We currently have 14 types of seed, and are preparing the ground. We recently added agricultural lime to the soil to address acidity, while we continue to research drip irrigation systems and agricultural best practices. We are also in the process of recruiting staff to help us sufficiently run the agricultural operation.

Prayer Request: Pray for wisdom and good stewardship as we develop this land for the long-term nourishment of our students and community.

Staff Transitions

Each year, we navigate the reality of teachers leaving our schools to pursue opportunities in Kenya's public education sector through the Teachers Service Commision. This year, vacancies arose in Kiswahili, Christian Religious Education, Biology, and Agriculture at Chelezo. We are pleased to report that the recruitment process went smoothly and our new teachers joined us at the beginning of February.

Prayer Request: Please pray that our new teachers would settle in well and quickly adopt eduKenya’s mission and vision. Also pray for the longevity of our strongest teachers and for stability and excellence in academic instruction across our classrooms.

Health and Nutrition Education

We continue to focus on providing a hands-on, practical education to our students. At our Mawewa Primary School, students began the year learning to prepare sukuma wiki (collard greens), a well loved staple in many Kenyan homes. This cooking project taught students how to make nutritious meals while emphasizing the vital role proper nutrition plays in their health and development, which is essential knowledge for breaking the cycle of poverty in Mathare.

Prayer Request: Pray for the health and wellness of our students and their families, and that the nutrition education we provide would empower them to make wise, healthy choices.
