Bridging the Gap

Bridging the Gap

In August, as schools across Kenya closed for their three-week break, most children looked forward to rest and play. Unfortunately, for our learners in the Mathare slum, school holidays force some of our most vulnerable children to grow up far too quickly. Instead of simply playing with their agemates, they face real struggles such as hunger and insecurity.

At eduKenya, our schools serve as more than centers of learning, they are sanctuaries of hope and nourishment. Each school day, we provide two essential meals: a warm cup of porridge in the morning and a balanced lunch in the afternoon.

These simple meals represent security and care for children whose home lives are often marked by food insecurity and neglect. When our school gates close for the holidays, this vital lifeline is temporarily severed, leaving families to face overwhelming challenges alone.

The burden of feeding children during school breaks becomes crushing for parents already struggling with unemployment and rising costs of living. Some are forced to leave their children unattended while searching for casual work, hoping to earn enough for just one meal.

Others may not be present at all, leaving children to navigate long, hungry days on their own, with some children in Mathare resorting to rummaging through garbage heaps in desperate search of food.

This is part of the heartbreaking reality that drives our mission at eduKenya beyond the classroom walls. We recognize that true transformation requires addressing the basic needs that make learning possible, which is why our team works closely with families to provide support wherever we can.

Your Support Can Bridge the Gap

In the face of these challenges, we witness the incredible power of community. Generous donors who may never meet the children they help and dedicated teachers and staff who check on students during breaks create small miracles every day. With one school break having just ended and another coming up in the next couple of months, will you join us in providing hope during the upcoming school holidays when it's needed most?

Your support can help us bridge the gap, ensuring that no child in our care goes hungry while schools are closed.
